Why Do We Celebrate Labor Day?

For most people, hearing the words “Labor Day” is typically associated with two things: a day off from work and the end of the summer season. But why are we celebrating Labor Day in the first place? Let’s travel back in time and discover the story behind this historical federal holiday in the United States.

The History of Labor Day

Labor Day is a federal holiday observed to pay tribute to the working men and women of the country. It has been celebrated in the United States and Canada since 1894, which was first celebrated by labor unions.

According to historians, Peter McGuire, general secretary of Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and co-founder of the American Federation of Labor had the original idea of a day to commemorate solidarity with workers across the US. However, many historians dispute that Matthew Maguire, a machinist who became the secretary of Local 344 of the International Association of Machinists in Paterson, N.J was the originator of this event.

The first documented Labor Day celebration was done by local municipalities and states before it became a national federal holiday — specifically on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, according to the Department of Labor. It was made possible by the New York Central Labor Union, a network of several labor unions with a mission to work toward better working conditions. The second Labor Day celebration followed a year later on September 5, 1883.

Labor Day became a three-day weekend in 1884 when the first Monday of every September was selected as the holiday, which encouraged other cities and states to honor workers as well. The workers' unions chose the first Monday in September because it was halfway between Independence Day and Thanksgiving. From 1885 to 1894, 32 states passed bills to adopt a day to honor workers.

On June 28, 1894, Congress passed the act establishing the first Monday in September as a legal national Labor Day holiday. The original form of the holiday was a street parade to show the public "the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations" followed by a large picnic to provide some fun for workers and their families.

Nowadays, Labor Day carries less significance as a celebration of working people and more as the end of summer. Schools, government offices, and businesses are closed on Labor Day so people can get in one last trip to the beach or have one last cookout before the weather starts to turn colder.
