When you hear “self-care”, what comes to mind? Does it make you think of a spa day? Or having a shopping spree? Or maybe just binge-watching on your favorite series while relaxing with a glass of wine on hand? You’re absolutely right! These are just ways to practice self-care and every individual has their own way to do it.
Before we give meaning to what “self-care” is, let us clear things out first. One common misconception when talking about self-care is that it is synonymous with self-indulgence. Self-care means taking care of oneself that will result in healthier well-being, which comes in different aspects: physically, emotionally, mentally, socially, and spiritually.
The term self-care itself has grown a lot in popularity over the years. In fact, according to Google Trends, the searches for “self-care” have doubled since 2015. This is extremely valuable since people are now becoming more aware of what could be done to increase self-care awareness.
The Definition of Self-Care
Different organizations and institutions have different definitions for self-care, but most of these definitions have taken a health-oriented approach. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines self-care as a person’s ability to improve their health, prevent diseases, and cope with illness and disability either with the support of a health care provider or by themselves.
This definition would basically entail that self-care includes all the things that keep an individual physically healthy, including hygiene, nutrition, and seeking medical help whenever needed. These are also the steps to manage stressors in an individual’s life and take care of his or her own health and well-being.
In a 2010 study published by the JBI Library of Systematic Reviews, self-care is defined as the set of activities one engages in life daily. Simplified, these are all the activities a person does every day to keep themselves healthy.
Meanwhile, BMC Palliative Care defines self-care as the self-initiated behavior that an individual chooses to do to promote good health and general well-being. This study has also emphasized that aside from being healthy, self-care is also about including coping strategies to deal with stressors in life.
As self-care has become more mainstream in recent years, the definitions have also adapted to become more applicable to the general public. Nowadays, self-care is generally known as anything that a person does to keep themselves feeling nourished.
The Importance of Self-Care
Nowadays, self-care has become a necessity that one should not overlook. It has become a norm for people to work long hours and pass on vacation days. But remember that succumbing to too much work takes away the opportunity for proper self-care. It will not only benefit yourself but as well as your budgeting since mental health services can be costly.
Neglecting self-care can also result in a lot of negative consequences to your mental well-being, including stress, burnout, depression, resentment, and anxieties. Engaging with regular self-care has been proven to greatly improve concentration, increase happiness and reduce frustration. When it comes to its physical benefits, self-care results in better heart health. reduces the risks of stroke and cancer, and may even slow down the aging process.
