Baby’s Safety is a Parent’s Priority

When building a family, it is undoubtedly a series of ups and downs that will definitely test the patience of the parents. With a baby’s growth and development to be dynamic and ever-changing, parents are guaranteed to always be on their feet to accommodate their needs.

It is a parent’s responsibility to keep their kids happy and healthy which takes thought and effort every day. When a new baby comes into the family, parents need to protect their infant from harm. This duty has become so important, that Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA) started Baby Safety Month every September to remind parents to apply baby-proof safety standards in their homes.

Babies and toddlers are very active, curious, and often excitable. Although these traits can be cute, these are also the reasons why they have a higher risk of injury. As a parent, there are plenty of ways to prevent injury to your baby.

Keep in mind that baby-proofing your home is a guaranteed way to prevent babies from harm. Injuries are the most common cause of harm in babies and toddlers beyond the first year of their lives. Most injuries are predictable and mostly preventable as long as proper safety measures have been applied.

Let’s take a house tour and focus on each room on what you can do to babyproof your home.

Safety in the Living Room

  1. Keep the photo frames up on the wall

Photo frames often have glass that when dropped or knocked down, can shatter, form shards, and cause cuts to a child. Mount these frames up on the wall where a baby can’t reach them.

  1. Mounted TV

A toddler will find it enticing to climb on a TV stand and when they do, the set can fall on them. It is advisable to mount your television securely on the wall. If mounting is not feasible, you can anchor a TV on a stand using industrial-strength Velcro straps.

  1. Cover the fireplace

Install heat-resistant gates on the fireplace to prevent toddlers from going near the fireplace. Some artificial fireplaces contain small rocks that can be a choking hazard. If your fireplace has it, remove them as it is only for aesthetic effects. Lastly, store the fire-stoking in an unreachable place.

  1. Hide the power strips

A toddler’s curious hand will grab anything it can reach, including a power strip. Keep the power cords hidden by running them behind the furniture or a power-strip cover.

  1. Store battery-operated objects

Batteries are often the most common choking hazard for babies, plus some batteries contain harmful substances that can harm your baby’s stomach when ingested. Secure your remote control’s battery cover with tape or place it in an unreachable area to completely prevent battery poisoning.

Safety in the Kitchen

  1. Install safety locks

Some of our kitchen cupboards and drawers contain very harmful substances for babies and to prevent them from finding and handling these, it is best to keep these storage spaces closed. You can do this with the help of inexpensive plastic locks for your cabinets, drawers, refrigerator, and oven.

  1. Keep the kitchen floor clean and safe

Babies and toddlers spend most of their time on the floor playing and following you around. As we all know, the kitchen floor is home to many harmful bacteria due to the abundance of food sources and humidity. It is best to clean and mop the floor every day to lessen the risks of having a bacteria-infected kitchen.

Additionally, if a portion of food drops on the floor, wherever you are, immediately pick it up before your toddler has a chance to grab it and eat it.

  1. Relocate cleaners from under the sink

Typically, kitchen and bathroom cleaners are stored under the kitchen sink and this place can be easily accessed by a child. Although you can install safety locks to prevent your baby from opening it, chances are it can still be opened by a persistent baby.

Kitchen cleaners contain a lot of harmful chemicals that can cause poisoning and skin and eye irritation. Store these cleaners in a higher cabinet or the garage.

  1. Unplug appliances

Apart from saving electric bills, unplugging your appliances when not in use will prevent your kids from turning them on, which can result in injuries. Appliances such as blenders, vacuum cleaners, and toasters are the main culprit of baby injury for the past decade.

  1. Use a baby gate

If you want to entirely restrict your baby from going to the kitchen on its own, you may want to install a baby gate between the kitchen and the adjoining room. Just make sure that they are still being supervised from the other side of the room.

Safety in the Bedroom

  1. Keep the baby’s sleep area free from risky objects

When your baby is about to sleep, make sure that soft objects, loose bedding, or any objects that could strangle, suffocate and entrap your baby out of their sleep area. These include pillows, quilts, comforters, blankets, and stuffed toys.

  1. Install safety alarms

Install smoke alarms in every room and install CO alarms on every floor of your house. Buy alarms with long-life lithium batteries. These are typically needed to be changed annually. Test alarms monthly to ensure that they are working properly.

  1. Secure the dressers

Aside from installing safety locks on all the drawers that can be reached by your baby, make sure that it is secured against the wall or on the floor to prevent it from falling over your baby.

Safety in the Bathroom

  1. Always keep the toilet lid down

If your child leans over to look into the toilet bowl when using it, he could easily lose his balance, fall headfirst, and drown in as little as an inch of water. Keep the toilet lid down when not in use and for optimal safety, install a toilet lock to prevent your toddler from lifting the lid.

  1. Lay a non-slip mat

Place a non-slip mat on the base of your bathtub. This will guarantee that your child will not slip when they are inside the tub. It can be very easy for your baby or toddler to slip right over, even if they’re just sitting, especially if the tub is wet.

  1. Install a spout cover

When bathing your toddler, you may notice that the faucet is fairly even with your kid’s height, which can have the potential to bonk their head! To prevent this dangerous injury, you can install a spout cover that can also add some fun when taking a bath. They are typically made from soft rubber or silicone that will cover the spout. Without blocking the lever and the hole of the spout.

  1. Monitor the water temperature

To prevent scalding, always check that your water heater registers no more than 120 degrees Fahrenheit. If you don’t have a thermometer, check the water’s temperature with your wrist or elbow. It should be lukewarm and not hot.
