With the shift of home quarantining and work-from-home this past year, there has been a sudden rise in dog adoptions around the country. And now that traveling is now becoming more open, it is not surprising to see that more people are ready to pack up their things and hit the road once again for a family road trip. But of course, since our dogs are a part of the family, we cannot just leave them behind when it’s time to start adventuring again.

Although some of the country’s famous road trip destinations, such as national parks, are not dog-friendly spots, there are still a lot of alternative destinations that welcome well-behaved canine companions.

In our previous article, we have given the ultimate guide on what to prepare when going on a road trip with your dog. This time, we will be sharing with you five of our favorite road trip routes that are custom-picked to show you some of the best dog-friendly travel destinations in the US.

  1. The California Coast Road Trip

When it comes to road trips, the historic coastal road of Highway One is a must. This stretch of road will let you past beaches, mountains, farms and orchards, and breathtaking ocean views from your car windows.

Start your California road trip from San Francisco, where you and your furbaby can hike and romp at Fort Funston National Park. This is an excellent way to stretch and warm up your muscles before sitting and staying in your car for a few hours of drive. Then, drive by Carmel-by-the-Sea to breathe fresh ocean air while viewing magnificent beach views. You can also enjoy a meal at one of the many pet-friendly restaurants in Carmel.

If you are planning on some camping on your road trip, visit Big Sur to trek the redwoods with your furbaby. There are dozens of dog-friendly campsites and trails, just make sure to book beforehand to confirm if you can bring your canine companion. The Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park welcomes leashed dogs on their trails

  1. The Pacific Northwest Road Trip

If you are in the mood for beautiful ocean views and an urban adventure, then head to the Pacific Northwest to drive along Seattle up to the San Juan Islands. From Seattle, drive about 80 miles to Anacortes, Washington, where you can ride on ferries with your dog and depart for the San Juan Islands. While you are in Anacortes, enjoy walking with your dog in their dog-friendly parks.

After a fun day at the park, board the ferry (you can also bring your car along) and head to Orcas Island. Dogs are free of charge on the ferry and depending on the time of the year, you can even spot a whale! Orcas Island is home to plenty of dog-friendly activities such as hiking, swimming, and island-hopping to your heart’s content.

  1. The Midwestern Road Trip

The Midwest offers many Great Lakes loop tours but if you are going to take your dog on your road trip, we recommend starting in Chicago, then cruising up the eastern shore of Lake Michigan. This route will offer excellent Midwestern flair and of course, the natural beauty of four out of five of the Great Lakes in the US!

Visit the Round Barn Winery, Distiller, and Brewery, just over the state border of Indiana and Michigan. With a leash, your dog is welcome to explore the spacious orchard. Drive farther north and you will arrive at Sleeping Bear Dunes near the town of Glen Arbor. This dog-friendly state park offers nature walks, picnic spots, and amazing views of Lake Michigan from the top of dunes.

Want something more of the “American road trip” experience? Then check out the hidden gems along this Midwestern road. Most of these attractions welcome dogs and other pets, including the Biggest Ball of Twine and the world’s largest catsup bottle.

  1. The Southwestern Road Trip

Speaking of “American road trip”, there is nothing more quintessential than the legendary Route 66 road trip! Starting from Chicago heading southwest to Los Angeles, your dog will surely enjoy the most historic (and nostalgic) spots in between.

Bring lots of water for you and your dog as a road trip through the American southwest can be very hot, even not in the summers. Never leave your dog unattended in your car and for a more pleasurable experience, avoid taking this trip during the summer seasons.

Make sure to visit the famous dog-friendly landmark Big Texan in Amarillo, Texas. Take some creative photos with your dog while posing in front of the retro building facade and other retro-inspired attractions. While in Texas, enjoy a big slab of steak and treat your dog with some delicious meat scraps, too as most steakhouses welcome well-behaved dogs.

  1. The New England Road Trip

Want a quick road trip? Then drive through the charming New England. It is the perfect road trip destination because you can pass through many states in a relatively short amount of driving and the best part is, most of the attractions you’ll pass by are dog-friendly!

Start your road trip in Portland, Maine where you and your dog can hop on a ferry to explore nearby islands. Then head northwest to New Hampshire and explore White Mountain National Forest for some hiking and camping with your adventurous furbaby.

Continue your adventure west into Vermont and stop by at the world-famous Dog Mountain, an art gallery and farm in St. Johnsbury that features scenic trails, ponds, sculptures, and the popular Dog Chapel, where you can leave a note for a dearly departed dog from your past. From the name itself, your pooch will be welcome all year round.

Pack your bags and make sure to bring along lots of dog treats and enjoy a one-of-a-kind road trip with your dog! And to make your trip easier and more pleasurable, use this pet carrier from Supalo!

Dogs are not comfortable when being strapped on a seatbelt and they cannot just sit freely on the backseat as well. We all know how dogs love to stick their heads out of the car window while you’re driving fast and this can have a lot of consequences. Either your dog can fall out the window or floating dust particles can damage their eyes if they are peeking out of a window from a moving vehicle.

The best way to keep your dog safely in place while driving is to offer them a car carrier that can be attached to your car seat, such as the Pet Car Carrier Safety Seat Basket Cationic Grey.

This carrier seat features a reinforced clapboard to ensure that your pet will stay safe in place even on the bumpiest roads. It also has a thick, padded cushion that will offer maximum comfortability and support to pets up to 15 lbs. It measures 15.75 x 13.38 x 9.8 inches to provide a spacious room for your pet, there is even enough room to place their favorite toy in the carrier basket.
